Gorges Alcantara and Castiglione excursion
€189,99 – €709,99
The Alcantara Gorges are located in Sicily, within the Botanical and Geological Park, and owe their name to the Alcantara River that flows through eastern Sicily. The park and the gorges are the main tourist attraction of the Alcantara Valley. The gorges, which reach a height of up to 25 meters, are a formation of volcanic basalt, eroded by the river that has carved a channel about 6 km long by 5 wide. You will be fascinated by the spectacular reflections and sparkles of the water on the black walls of lava stone. The itinerary of the visit to the Gorges includes the passage to the Botanical and Geological Park where with the help of modern multimedia installations, it is possible to find out about the origins of the place. It is therefore time to immerse yourself in the uncontaminated nature of the park, following the path that leads to the Source of Venus along the river: from above it will be possible to admire the basalt walls that run towards the bottom, while going down to the Spiaggetta delle Gola , you will realize the power of nature’s creations and most likely you will feel very small! In Castiglione di Sicilia, however, it will not be difficult for you to notice how this village is closely linked to the medieval period, both for the narrow streets that characterize it and for the presence of a castle on top of a hill. The town is overflowing with monuments and works of art, especially churches such as the seventeenth-century Church of Sant’Antonio Abate, embellished by a bell tower with an unusual bulb dome, and the Basilica of the Madonna della Catena, which greedily guards numerous and precious artistic masterpieces. The castle of Lauria, which dominates the town of Castiglione, was born as a defensive fortress of the city, well built, on the sandstone rock, and surrounded by mighty defensive walls, it constituted a perfect military defense both in the hinterland and in the rest of the Alcantara Valley.
