It corresponds to the ancient Akragas, the original monumental nucleus of the city of Agrigento. And it is a regional archaeological park, the first in the country to have a sustainability report, which certifies not only its social and cultural commitment but also its commitment to the environment. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the Valley of the Temples of Agrigento is very rich in temples and monuments. In an enchanted valley, with flowering almond trees, Agrigento is home to the most impressive monumental ensemble in all of Magna Graecia, an exceptional historical testimony. The remains of the Hellenistic and then Punic-Roman city, the imposing Doric temples almost intact, the agora, the pagan and Christian necropolises and the dense network of underground aqueducts, constitute the wealth of a site that extends over about 1300 hectares and tells of a millennial history that began in the sixth century BC with the foundation of the ancient Greek colony of Akragas. The Valley of the Temples is characterized by the remains of ten temples in Doric order, three sanctuaries, a large concentration of necropolis, fortifications, part of a Roman Hellenistic quarter built on a Greek plan, two important meeting places: the lower and upper Agora . The temple of Castor and Pollux dedicated to the legendary twins born from the union of the queen of Sparta with Jupiter, has become the symbol of the city of Agrigento. The Temple of Concord is located along the Via Sacra, also built around the fifth century, today it is the best preserved.
