Syracuse and Noto excursion
€209,99 – €859,99
Noto is a small jewel of the Sicilian Baroque. A splendid village perched on a plateau overlooking the valley. An important Sicilian, Roman, Byzantine and then Arab center, it was destroyed in its full splendor by the earthquake of 1693, but thanks to the skilful reconstruction, Noto has become a magnificent city of art, together with Caltagirone, Militello, Catania, Modica, Palazzolo , Ragusa and Scicli. The extraordinary beauty of Noto, and of the other cities rebuilt after the earthquake, characterizes the whole Val di Noto. Great architects were called for the reconstruction. The result exceeded expectations and the reconstruction gave life to a wonderful work even if different from city to city: from the dark gray baroque of Catania, in which lava stone was used, to the bright honey-colored architecture of Noto. The medieval city, of which traces of the walls and the castle are visible, corresponds to the ancient Neto. The layout of the new city is instead the Baroque one, based on wide and straight streets interspersed with squares with stairways overlooked by churches and palaces. In Syracuse we will see the island of Ortigia which has taken on different names and colors over the centuries, which always leave intact its identity as a place intended for hospitality. The sea and the Scirocco, which in their millenary processes have outlined its profile, have marked the fate of this strip of Sicily halfway between East and West, between Carthage and Rome, pushing the Greek and Christian ships into the arms of its port. And that is why, walking through its labyrinthine alleys and crossing its countless squares, it is possible to live a unique experience and breathe all the scent of the Mediterranean. Discovering the island of Ortigia means coming into contact with different cultures, but above all getting to know Sicily in its most intimate aspects.
